A spectacular 7-day trek through five climate zones, passing the iconic Barranco Wall and Lava Tower with panoramic views of the summit.
The Machame Route, affectionately known as the "Whiskey Route," is one of the most popular and scenic paths up Mount Kilimanjaro. Over 6 to 7 days, trekkers traverse lush rainforests, open moorlands, high alpine deserts and finally the glacial summit zone. Named for its challenging nature — a reference to whisky being a harder drink than the "Coca-Cola" Marangu Route — the Machame trek rewards with exceptional scenery at every stage.
With an 85% summit success rate when done over 7 days, this route strikes an excellent balance between challenge and enjoyment. The extra day allows for proper acclimatization with a "climb high, sleep low" strategy, passing the dramatic Lava Tower at 4,630m before descending to Barranco Camp.
The adventure begins at Machame Gate (1,800m) where you'll register before entering the lush tropical rainforest. The trail winds through dense vegetation filled with colobus monkeys, exotic birds and towering trees draped in moss. The ascent is steady but manageable, gaining approximately 1,300m over 5-6 hours. By afternoon you'll arrive at Machame Camp (3,100m) on the edge of the moorland zone.
Day two takes you from the forest edge into the open moorland zone. The vegetation thins dramatically, replaced by giant heathers and lobelias. You'll traverse small streams and rocky terrain with views opening up to reveal the vast Shira Plateau. As you gain altitude, the landscape becomes increasingly stark and beautiful. Camp is set on the plateau at 3,840m with views of Kibo's southern ice fields.
This is the key acclimatization day — the "climb high, sleep low" strategy. You'll ascend to Lava Tower (4,630m), a dramatic volcanic plug, before descending to Barranco Camp (4,550m). The traverse takes you through the alpine desert zone where vegetation is sparse and the terrain is rocky and lunar-like. The views from Lava Tower are extraordinary, with the Breach Wall and summit ice fields towering above.
The day begins with the famous Barranco Wall — a steep, dramatic rock scramble that requires some hands-on climbing but no technical skills. It's exhilarating and one of the most memorable sections of the entire trek. Once over the wall, the trail traverses along exposed ridges with stunning views before descending into the Karanga Valley and climbing back up to Karanga Camp (4,630m).
A shorter trekking day that allows you to arrive at Barafu Camp early and rest before the midnight summit attempt. The trail traverses arid terrain with increasingly barren landscapes. You'll have clear views of both Mawenzi Peak and the Kibo summit. Once at Barafu (4,640m), eat well, hydrate and get several hours of sleep before the final push.
Summit day begins at midnight. By headlamp, you'll ascend the steep scree slopes of Kibo in the cold and darkness, aiming for Stella Point (5,756m) before the final push to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the Roof of Africa. Watch the sunrise paint the glaciers gold as you stand on the highest point in Africa. After photos and celebration, descend via Barafu to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for a well-earned rest.
The final day is a descent through the rainforest back to Mweka Gate (1,640m). The trail is straightforward and the change in scenery — from barren alpine terrain back to lush tropical vegetation — is dramatic. Collect your summit certificate at the gate and celebrate with your guide team. Transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
